A hydraulic variable vane pump is a type of positive displacement pump that uses rotating vanes mounted on a rotor to move hydraulic fluid. Unlike fixed displacement pumps, variable vane pumps allow the flow rate to be adjusted while maintaining a constant pressure, which enhances the overall control of hydraulic systems.

The core components of a hydraulic variable vane pump include:

Rotor: Centrally located and connected to the pump shaft, the rotor spins inside the housing.

Vanes: Mounted in radial slots on the rotor, these blades slide in and out as the rotor turns.

Cam Ring: An adjustable ring surrounding the rotor creates the eccentric path that allows the vanes to extend and retract.

Pump Housing: Encloses the rotor, vanes, and cam ring, forming the chamber for fluid movement.

Control Mechanism: Allows the cam ring's eccentricity to be varied, which changes the pump's displacement.

As the rotor rotates, the vanes are forced outward by centrifugal force and the cam ring's shape, creating a sealed chamber between adjacent vanes. Hydraulic fluid enters this chamber at the pump inlet and is trapped by the vanes. As the rotor continues to turn, the cam ring forces the vanes to retract, pushing the fluid toward the outlet.

By adjusting the cam ring's position relative to the rotor, the pump's displacement volume changes, allowing the output flow rate to increase or decrease without stopping the pump.
