To Print on Demand or Not?

Conversations among independent authors often center on the topic of print-on-demand (POD) and its significance in the world of self-publishing, particularly in comparison to traditional printing and book fulfillment services. Since its emergence, POD has empowered writers to bring their works to life. However, while it has opened doors for aspiring authors, it has also turned into a lucrative venture for the companies that provide these services, often resulting in higher profit margins for them at the expense of the authors. As a result, whether or not to go that route has become a dilemma for authors.

One of the appealing aspects of POD is that it allows authors to avoid inventory costs; books are printed only when orders come in. Despite its conveniences, relying on a POD service means you relinquish some control over your work. The printing company typically handles operational details and customer interactions. If your book doesn't achieve significant sales or if you penned it for reasons other than financial gain, these drawbacks might not seem overly concerning. However, if your book takes off, you'll find yourself giving up a hefty portion of the profits while also limiting your sales potential.

For authors who aspire to reach a broader audience, particularly those producing books for businesses or self-help coaching, it's often wise to consider working with a printer that offers fulfillment services. It allows for selling through various platforms—both online and in physical stores—significantly enhancing sales opportunities over time. Self-publishers have diverse goals and motivations, which must be considered when evaluating the POD model. For instance, during peak demand periods, such as the holiday season, bottlenecks in printing can occur, leading to delays that may frustrate customers.

Being clear about your reasons for writing and publishing a book is crucial, as it shapes many decisions. If you aim to maximize publicity and enhance your business profile, professional marketing support can be valuable. It can create opportunities to increase your visibility and secure media coverage, which may otherwise be difficult to attain. In today's competitive world, more professionals are recognizing the power of authorship to establish themselves as thought leaders. If you find yourself among these rising stars, take a moment to carefully evaluate your printing options, as the choice may impact your success.
