IQOS 屬於加熱式菸品（Heated Tobacco Product, HTP），並不等同於傳統電子煙。電子煙透過霧化電子煙油產生氣霧，而 IQOS 則使用內含真煙草的煙彈，加熱而非燃燒，產生含尼古丁的氣溶膠供使用者吸入。

ILUMA 系列的搭配 IQOS ILUMA煙彈，透過 SCIS® 無葉片加熱技術快速加熱煙彈，每顆煙彈約可吸 12 至 15 口，並透過智慧溫控鎖住菸草原香，降低焦味產生。這種設計提供穩定口感，同時避免傳統燃燒香煙帶來的高溫煙霧。
