This marks the second straight year they beat the Islanders in the penultimate series. In a game filled with big hits and strong goaltending on both ends, Yanni Gourde potted the game's lone goal in the second period while the Lightning were short-handed. He came off the bench, crashed the net and one-timed an Anthony Cirelli feed past Semyon Varlamov from the slot. Scoring a goal in Game 7 is a really amazing moment," Gourde said in French."I have rarely been so excited. I was so happy. I was nervous before this game, but it was good nervousne s. We worked hard tonight to win this game." Varlamov was spectacular otherwise; he made30 saves as the Lightning controlled play for the majority of the game. On the other end, Andrei Vasilevskiy continued his domination in series-clinching games with his third shutout of the 2021 postseason and his fourth straight shutout in clinchers dating to a 2-0 victory over the Stars to win the Cup. "Obviously it's great to have, I don't know, was that my fourth shutout? But obviously, it's all about our team," the netminder said following his 18-save performance. "We just played so well we needed to and in very important moments we just raised the bar. I don't have any more words than that. We have a job to do still and we have to raise the bar and play our best game the next two weeks." The biggest question mark entering the night waswhether Nikita Kucherov would suit up. "Not sure," Cooper said after the morning skate.Kucherov left Game 6 after taking a cro s-check from Scott Mayfield on his first shift (he threw a hit on Mat Barzal later in the shift). Kucherov played 16:29 on Friday and recorded two shots and two hits. "Well, there was no question if I'm going to play or not," Kucherov said postgame, latergiving a shout out to the fans for going crazy when he was shown on the Jumbotron for warmups. "I felt good and we decided to, you know, what else, to do Game 7. You've got to sacrifice yourself and play in this moment and share with the boys." It should be noted that Cooper did not think it was such a sure thing, even postgame, as he called the situation "dicey." The Lightning also got Erik Cernak back in the lineup after he mi sed the last two games. Cooper called his return "good mojo." Anyone looking at thissemifinal series Wednesday morning would have been shocked that it got to this point. The Lightning blew the Islanders out of Amalie Arena 8-0 in Game 5. Two nights later on Wednesday night, the Lightning went up 2-0 before the Islanders, in front of a boisterous Ty France Jersey home crowd, beganto claw back into the game. Jordan Eberle and Scott Mayfield tallied goalsto tie it before Anthony Beauvillier notched the game-winner 68 seconds into OT for a 3-2 win. The faithful responded by giving the playersa beer shower. With the win, Tampa Bay continued an impre sive streak of not losing two playoff games in a row since 2019, which is also the last time it faced elimination.
