I reckon it works if you pick the right design. I didn't want some crazy pattern fighting with the screen, so I looked through https://costacover.com/collections/beige-wallpaper and went with something really subtle. The wall still has texture and a bit of movement, but it doesn't distract from the TV. My cabinet is dark wood too, so the warm beige gives the whole setup some contrast. Way better than staring at a completely blank white wall, that's for sure.
